A Youth-Led Movement for Cleaner, Greener Mountain Communities
Gilgit-Baltistan’s mountains, rivers, and forests are treasures of nature, but unmanaged waste and plastic pollution are putting these fragile ecosystems at risk. The YANG Clean Drive was created to turn awareness into action — bringing young people, schools, and communities together to protect the places we call home.

This is not a one-time campaign. Every month, YANG organizes a clean-up drive in a different community or school. So far, 38 drives have been completed, engaging over 3,000 volunteers across Gilgit-Baltistan. Each drive is more than just removing waste — it’s about building a culture of responsibility where keeping our environment clean becomes a shared community commitment.
Figures and Impacts
- 38 clean-up drives across schools and communities
- 3,000+ volunteers mobilized, including students, youth, and families
- Thousands of volunteer hours dedicated to cleaning and awareness
- School-based leadership: students learning to lead environmental action
- Community resilience strengthened: cleaner rivers, safer public spaces, and reduced plastic pollution
Schools are at the heart of this movement. Students don’t just learn about pollution — they take part in cleaning their surroundings, understanding firsthand that they can be leaders of environmental change. Communities, too, are stepping up, recognizing that waste affects water, soil, livestock, and livelihoods. By working together, residents are not only restoring public spaces but also protecting the ecosystems that sustain them.
Every drive sparks conversations: How can we reduce single-use plastics? Where does our waste go? How can we stop dumping near rivers? These discussions turn clean-ups into long-term awareness, ensuring that the change lasts beyond the day of action.
At its core, the Clean Drive is about youth leadership and volunteerism. Young people are mobilizing peers, coordinating activities, and inspiring others to act. A small group cleaning a schoolyard today can become a network of environmental advocates tomorrow.
The vision is clear: Cleaner communities, greener mountains, stronger youth leadership. By sustaining monthly clean-ups and expanding to more schools and villages, YANG is building a movement that goes beyond cleaning — toward prevention, awareness, and lasting environmental responsibility.

Every action matters. One volunteer inspiring another. One school leading by example. One community taking ownership of its environment. Together, these small steps are becoming a year-round movement for a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Gilgit-Baltistan.
